Overall section winners represent Idaho in the Rockefeller, Barber, Denker Tournament of Champions!

How do we plan for this?

 

Date:  April 25, 2026 (Top 3 from each section play April 26)

 

Location:  ISU, SUB, 921 South 8th Avenue, Pocatello, Idaho 83209

 

Times: check-in:  8:00-8:30 am for 6-8th, 10:00-10:30 am K-5th

Round Times:  9:00 am (6-12th grade) and 11:00 am K-5th grade  sections, continuous with break after round 2.

 

Format:  5SS G/30;d5 (K-5th, Kids Scoresheet)

Rounds G/45;d5 (6-12th, must keep score)

 

Sections:  US Chess Rated K-3rd grade section (begins 11 am)

US Chess Rated 4-5th grade section (begins 11 am)

US Chess Rated 6-8th grade section (begins 9 am)

US Chess Rated 9-12th grade section (begins 9 am)

 

Registration:  $30 (Pre-registration only), $25 for ICA Members, $40 family rate (email us your entry if it is discounted).

No on-site registration.

Registration fees will never inhibit a player from entering, please contact us for help.

Must be qualified! (see the qualified list here)

 

Prizes:

  • 1st-3rd place trophies Overall (K-5th, 6-8th, and 9-12th section) and for 1st-3rd place each grade level.  Top School in each section (based on top 4 players for each school).

 

  • Top three overall from each section are invited to become the Idaho State Scholastic Champion on April 28 in the Idaho Tournament of Champions (5SS G/45;d5).

 

  • Overall K-3rd section winner is named Idaho’s Representative to the Maurice Ashley Tournament of K-3rd grade Champions to be held during the U.S. Open.

 

  • Overall 4-5th section winner is named Idaho’s Representative to the Rockefeller Tournament of K-5th grade Champions to be held during the U.S. Open.

 

  • Overall 6-8th section winner is named Idaho’s Representative to the Barber Tournament of 6-8th grade Champions to be held during the U.S. Open.

  • Overall 9-12th section winner is named Idaho’s Representative to the Denker Tournament of 9-12th grade Champions to be held during the U.S. Open.

 

Games: Chess sets provided, clocks provided.  No Insufficient Losing Chances

 rule.  

 

TD:  Adam Porth, Jeff Roland, Deon Goodwin, Jay Simonson.

 

Side Events:  Game analysis by former state champions, Parents & Friends Quad Tournament.

 

Tie-break Order: Solkoff, Cumulative, Cumulative of Opposition, Modified Median. If more than 2 players have a perfect score, then a G/15;d3 or a G/5;d3 playoff will be used.

 

Byes:  Maximum 1-half point bye, any round, commit by round 2.
