We want to thank him for his generosity and showing up to inspire the next generation of future grandmasters!  \nBoasting millions of followers and billions of views online\, Hikaru is a Super Grandmaster and currently the World No. 2 player with a FIDE rating of 2810. He is a five-time U.S. Chess Champion and a five-time Speed Chess Champion. \n\nOpen to All K–12th Graders from Anywhere \n\nPresenting the NY Metro Area’s very own Championship in the Grade format! \n\n💐 A Mother’s Day celebration in New York City. \n\n👩‍👧‍👦 Calling all chess kids and chess moms. You asked for more formal hotel events\, and we heard you loud and clear. \n🏆 Mother’s Day weekend (May 9-10\, 2026)\, the region’s most dedicated young players will gather in Times Square once again – this time to crown NYC Champions in every grade from K-12\,  while celebrating the mothers who made their journeys possible. \nOfficial Chess is proud to announce the inaugural New York Metro Area Scholastic Chess Grade Championships. \nThis is a 2-Day tournament with 4 rounds on Saturday and 2 rounds Sunday. \nA maximum of two half point byes are allowed. \nPlayers may choose to use both byes for both Sunday rounds and receive 0.5 points for each of the games\, however this must be declared when registering or before the start of Round 1 with the on-site customer service desk (aka Chess Control). Once you declare half-point byes for Sunday\, it cannot be changed. \n💖 Honoring Chess Mothers\nThis is meant to be more than a chess championship where only the kids showcase their hard work and dedication. It is also a celebration of chess mothers\, and a recognition of the immense sacrifices they make in support of their children’s passions. \n✈️ From dragging suitcases on planes\, trains and automobiles across the country to early morning subway rides across the City 🚇 \n🙉 From searching for quiet corners inside crowded school auditoriums to take important weekend work calls 📞 \n🧘to sitting patiently for hours on uncomfortable hallway floors just so they can immediately give that reassuring hug or kiss away a tear in case of a tough loss 🤗; \n😇 Moms put everyone else first 💖 – often balancing careers\, managing households\, making sandwiches\, ensuring their children never fall behind in school\, AND enabling Chess dreams!📚✨. \n\n💎First-Class Championship Experience\nMother’s Day is about family\, togetherness\, and giving thanks to the heroes who make everything possible. \n🌷 We are committed to creating an event that properly honors chess moms \n🎁 From Mother’s Day gifts\, experiences\, brunches 🥂\, and special surprises – this will be an unforgettable Mother’s Day weekend. \n👑 Our goal is to give chess moms the recognition they deserve\, while giving our children a high end championship experience inside one of the most extraordinary venues in New York City. \n👜 And of course\, we hope all the dads will be there too\, proudly carrying the chess bags and doing their part … for once (only kidding\, mostly!). \n\n💐 We hope your family will join us for what promises to be a meaningful\, memorable\, and inspiring Mother’s Day weekend and the beginning of a lasting new tradition in New York City chess. \n\n\n✨ All-Star Cast\nThe tournament will be run under the direction of the most qualified and distinguished team available. SUMMARY:Official Chess Summer Scholastic Showdown Tournament at Baruch Middle School MS104 – July 12\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Innovative Pairing System: \n– Balanced like Quads: avoid big rating gaps \n– Exciting like Swiss: compete for awards \n  \nSchool is out but Chess is still IN!  – Play. Learn. Repeat. Improve Your Chess Experience. \n*Maximize Ratings – Minimize Mismatches* \n  \nScroll down to bottom for Advance Entries and to Register for the tournament \n  \n– We combine the best attributes of quads (play opponents closest to your rating) with Swiss (best system for determining tournament winners)\, aka the Monrad system. \n– No more early-round blowouts or rating-risk matchups like sometimes happens in a traditional Swiss. \n– Top players won’t be penalized with low-rated opponents just for being seeded high. \n– Monrad minimizes the dreaded “huge rating risk\, very little upside” situation Conversely\, kids at the lower-end of the section breaks will not have to fear an “automatic first round loss”. \n– Our hybrid system creates the ideal environment for both growth and rating gains – pairing players near their level for meaningful\, competitive games. \n– Smarter pairings. Fairer competition. Better results. \n  \n*No coach to review your games? We have you covered! (Register for “Entry PLUS” at checkout)* \n– Upgrade your experience and learn from Grandmaster/reigning Correspondence Chess World Champion  Jon Edwards and Original Life Master/NM Eric Fleischman in between rounds (an OLM title is bestowed when a player keeps an established rating above 2200 for 300 rated games) \n  \nTournament TDs: Jabari McGreen\, Harold Stenzel (NY State Chess Association Hall of Fame TD) \n  \nTeam Room Requests: Email info@officialchess.org \n  \nLocation: Simon Baruch Middle School MS104 (330 E 21st St\, Manhattan) \n  \nCheck-In: 9:00–9:30 AM (In-person only) \n  \nFormat: 4 Rounds | USCF Rated \n  \nSections: \n– Current Published Regular Rating (Supplement) used – Search for player’s rating here: https://new.uschess.org/civicrm/player-search \n– Note grade restrictions \n\nPremier Section K-5 only (u500 – unrated welcome but must have USCF membership) – G/25 d5\nElite Section K-5 only (u1000) – G/40 d5\nGrand Section K-12 only (u1500) – G/50 d5\nChampionship Section K-12 only (u2000) – G/50 d5\n\n  \nPairing Procedures: \n– Initial pairings based on closest-rated opponent in same section\, NOT traditional Swiss systems or accelerated Swiss \n\nBy contrast\, in a traditional Swiss pairing system\, if there is a 100-player section\, the number 1 seed (ranked by rating) will play number 51\, number 2 plays number 52\, etc. – This of course leads to much higher ratings gaps between players which does not benefit the higher or the lower rated player\n\n– Subsequent pairings based on current tournament points\, followed by closest rated opponent with same points \n– 1 point will be awarded for every win\, 0.5 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss \n– Players may choose up to 2 “byes” \n\nAttendees will not have to play in that round but will still receive 0.5 points for pairing and tournament result purposes. Usually “byes” are taken for the first round or last round due to scheduling conflicts but it is ok to take a “bye” for any round. “Byes” must be requested at the time of registration.\n\n– Please note that player colors will alternate between each round but in rare cases a player may be assigned the same color in consecutive rounds due to other contraints \n  \nIndividual Awards: \n– Except for the Championship Section\, trophies for top 3 individual players in each section \n– Those with the same final score but lower tie breaks than the 3rd place winner will NOT LEAVE EMPTY HANDED – They will also receive a “3rd Place Tie Trophy” \n– Top 3 players in the Open Section will receive $250\, $150\, $100\, respectively – Monetary awards will be split in cases of ties – e.g. If 2 players score 4.0\, they will both split $400 evenly (first and second place awards)\, any players with 3.5 will split $100 evenly (third place award)\, if no 3.5 scores\, then the 3.0 scores will split the third place award\, etc. \n  \nTeam Awards (Team members must be from the same school): \n– Team Trophy 1 (Top Scorers from a School): \n\nTop 6 individual results from each school contribute to the Top Scorers Team score\nTop Scorers Team trophy given to top 3 schools\nOnly the top 6 student scorers should go to stage to receive the Top Scorers Team Trophy\n\n– Team Trophy 2 (All Players from a School): \n\nEvery individual result from each school contribute to the Overall Team score\nOverall Team trophy given to top 3 schools\nEvery student from the school should go to stage to receive the Team trophies\, regardless of their individual scores\n\n  \nTie-Break Methods for Awards (Official USCF Tournament Methods): \n1) Modified Median – Total points scored by your opponents (half-points for early withdrawals)\, and disregards the least-significant (usually the lowest scoring) opponent.  The player with the highest total has played opponents with the best scores in the tournament‑‑ in theory\, the hardest opponents. \n2) Solkoff – Total points scored by your opponents (half-points for early withdrawals)\, including the lowest scoring opponents \n3) Cumulative – Sum of your total points after each round (each rounds score is added to the previous rounds which means players who won in earlier rounds score higher than those won in later rounds) \n4) Opponents Cumulative – Same as above exccept this method is based on your opponents’ score \n  \nAdditional Info: \n– Parental Supervision – Parents must stay with children at all times in between matches. No running or ball play indoors per school safety rules. \n– Notation – Required for all sections except U500. Sheets and pencils provided; notation books available for purchase. \n\nPlease note that game reviews with coaches are only possible if the child notates the moves of the games\n\n– Equipment – Boards and pieces provided. Players must bring their own clocks (available for purchase on-site). \n– Lunch – Pizza available for purchase. \n–  Must have active USCF membership – If needed\, renew here
